The nerd in me likes to read a lot, so naturally, my first foray into barbecue started with me picking up a book or two. Below, you’ll find the books I have found the most useful or entertaining during my trip down BBQ boulevard.

This is the book that started it all for me. That spread of incredible BBQ on the front cover is what sucked me in when I was first browsing around the book store. I had been toying with the idea of purchasing a pellet smoker and getting into barbecue, but wanted to read up a little first. Aaron’s chapter on smokers convinced me that I wanted an offset stick-burner rather than the popular pellet burners on the market today. In any case, I highly recommend this book. Read it and then smoke a brisket. You won’t be disappointed.
In my opinion, the recipe for Jake’s Cowboy Beans alone justifies purchasing this book. Those beans are so delicious and a perfect way to use up some of that left over brisket you smoked. I also highly recommend the pork shoulder recipe with the Gold Sauce to go along with it. That was probably the best pulled pork sandwich I had ever tasted. The short profiles of different pitmasters were also fun and inspiring to read.
